Norwell Artist Wins Best in Show in Scituate Arts Association’s

2014 Annual Juried Show

Norwell artist Virginia (Ginny) Wilson, this year’s Best in Show Winner at the Scituate Arts Association's Juried Show is no stranger to such recognition. Ginny worked as a self-employed calligrapher and graphic artist until 1990. At that point, she decided to stop teaching and working commercially and instead focused on painting and using color.
Ginny’s work does indeed sparkle with color. Having exhibited in over 100 group and solo shows in the last 20 years, she has won dozens of awards and ribbons for her work. She has studied with a host of well respected South Shore artists including Virginia Avery, Mary Lizotte, Joreen Benbenek, Mary LoPiccolo, Katherine Smit, Jean Simms, Andrew Kusmin and attended workshops with Peter Spataro.

The SAA’s award was given to her for her work, “The Harmonica Man.” Of this engaging study of a musician's intense concentration, the Judges’s comments were: “Great sense of character; composition; appealing edges, hard vs soft.” Ginny’s calligraphic skills shine in her handling of the subject's beard and the stripes on his shirt. Her colors dance across the page, bouncing from the subject’s shirt to his hat and are reflected in the background.

The Juror’s for the 2014 Juried Show were Laura Harvey known for her mixed media paintings & collages, Patricia Isaac whose medium of choice is oil pastels with a focus on the interplay of color and light and Burton Longenbach who values the painterly energies of his media which are usually oil or watercolor.

Ginny’s work, along with over 60 other juried artists' entries from the South Shore and as far as Bellingham to Barnstable, will be on display at the Front Street Art Gallery through April 27th with an Awards Reception of Friday, April 11 from 6:30 to 9. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 to 5 and on Sundays from Noon to 5. The SAA’s Juried Show is sponsored by Business Patrons-Janet Cornacchio, Jack Conway & Co, Scituate and Scituate Federal Savings Bank and Business Sponsor--Frame Center of Hanover.
